Modern Baby

I have two kids - the things they know and do truly blow my mind. As a modern baby, my daughter is building her very own web site using FrontPage. My son, a modern baby in his own right, excels at video games and can often beat me when playing his favorite Star Wars game on the XBOX.

This got me thinking about how I would define a modern baby. Is it technology alone that drives their knowledge? Is it simply a matter of trying to keep up with a technically savvy Dad? Probably a bit of both.

They are consumate computer users (PC of course, no Macs in this house).

This has me frighened enough that I’ve installed McAfee on both their computers with the optional WHITELIST turned on so I can control what web sites they actually visit.

Further, they both understand the concept of Tivo far better than their grandparents. Heck, when I was a kid, you watched what was on, when it was on. Had to take a bathroom break? Better wait for a commercial! Today, my 6 year old not only understands how to pause TV, but also comprehends the concept of time shifting his favorite shows. “Live” TV vs. “Tivo’d” TV he gets - which still boggles my mind.

Does this make my babies modern in the sense they have a far better grasp of the world around them than we ever had as children. Who knows - but in the end, I believe they will move beyond the capacity I have as an adult and will set the stage for a better, more productive life for THEIR children.
